Dr. Carl Brumback
The Lifetime Achievement Award
recipient from the American
Association of Public Health
Physicians is Dr. C.L. Brumback who
for the past 50 years has dedicated
his life and practices to the people
of Palm Beach County, Florida
through its Public Health
Department.
Dr. Brumback is Palm Beach Counties
first Public Health Doctor and is
credited with shaping the direction of
health care in the area. Through
the years Dr. Brumback has championed
innovative preventive practices like
being one of the first to enlist
nutritionist and social workers to
create a total wellness program for
migrant workers. In addition, it
is his practices within Palm Beach
County that have served as a model for
Health Departments throughout the State
of Florida.
It has always been Dr. Brumback's
statement that he works not for
government but the people. To that
end he has served in touching the lives
of literally thousands as he has
improved the care and lifestyle of every
resident and visitor to Palm Beach
County. Through Dr. Brumback's
watch the Environmental Health and
Engineering Department has grown to
include every aspect of air, water and
land pollution monitoring as well as
been charged with investigating and
finding solutions to food borne
problems, day care facilities, and
assisting with environmental
emergencies. Health clinics have
been established throughout the county
and the one in Belle Glade, Florida
bears his name, a tribute to his many
hours of service to the migrant
community in that area.
From its modest beginnings in Dr.
Brumback's Rambler Nash Station Wagon
and an office trailer located in the
muck of the farming community the Palm
Beach County Health Department has grown
to encompass 800 employees and a budget
of $44 million.
At 85 Dr. Brumback remains active in
Public Health as he coordinates the
Residency Program which, when he started
it, was the first of its kind in a
Public Health Department.
The Lifetime Achievement award was
presented to Dr. Brumback via audio
conference from Atlanta, Georgia with
fellow physicians, residents and staff
members in the Health Department
present. All felt it was an honor to be
present when their colleague, mentor,
and friend received this distinction of
a lifetime.
