Dr. Carl Brumback

Dr. Carl Brumback     The Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the American Association of Public Health Physicians is Dr. C.L. Brumback who for the past 50 years has dedicated his life and practices to the people of Palm Beach County, Florida through its Public Health Department.

Dr. Brumback is Palm Beach Counties first Public Health Doctor and is credited with shaping the direction of health care in the area.  Through the years Dr. Brumback has championed innovative preventive practices like being one of the first to enlist nutritionist and social workers to create a total wellness program for migrant workers.  In addition, it is his practices within Palm Beach County that have served as a model for Health Departments throughout the State of Florida.

It has always been Dr. Brumback's statement that he works not for government but  the people. To that end he has served in touching the lives of literally thousands as he has improved the care and lifestyle of every resident and visitor to Palm Beach County.  Through Dr. Brumback's watch the Environmental Health and Engineering Department has grown to include every aspect of air, water and land pollution monitoring as well as been charged with investigating and finding solutions to food borne problems, day care facilities, and assisting with environmental emergencies.  Health clinics have been established throughout the county and the one in Belle Glade, Florida bears his name, a tribute to his many hours of service to the migrant community in that area.

From its modest beginnings in Dr. Brumback's Rambler Nash Station Wagon and an office trailer located in the muck of the farming community the Palm Beach County Health Department has grown to encompass 800 employees and a budget of $44 million.

At 85 Dr. Brumback remains active in Public Health as he coordinates the Residency Program which, when he started it, was the first of its kind in a Public Health Department.

The Lifetime Achievement award was presented to Dr. Brumback via audio conference from Atlanta, Georgia with fellow physicians, residents and staff members in the Health Department present. All felt it was an honor to be present when their colleague, mentor, and friend received this distinction of a lifetime.
