West Nile Virus Update
Current Reported Sentinel Counts
for Palm Beach County*

West Nile > Sentinel Updates > Reporting Dead Birds

The Sentinel Chicken Site Project

The Health Department, through its environmental division, has made arrangements for 60 white chickens to be placed at 10 locations throughout the county. These chickens are resistant to mosquito born diseases because of their preventive antibodies. By testing the serum (blood) from these chickens it can be determined, through their elevated antibody levels, whether they have been exposed to West Nile Virus, St. Louis Encephalitis or Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

This project is the first line of defense in identifying potential problem areas for these diseases. Once identified the public can take preventive measures against infection.

Chickens - Those chickens used for testing of disease.

Wild Birds  - Those Birds, i.e. reported by the public or other sources.

Mosquito Pool - Large quantities of mosquitoes are collected for testing by a method called PCR. This method can determine if they are carrying the disease.

Horses - Horses seem to be more susceptible to West Nile Virus than even humans. Thus, the horse population is monitored for exposure through the Department of Agriculture and reported to the Health Department for tracking.
