Institutional Health,
 & Child Care facilities

The purpose of this Environmental Health Program is to detect and prevent disease caused by natural and man-made factors in the environment. The program is part of the States public health mission and includes the following key functions.

Institutional Health

    Inspection of various institutions

Inspected facilities include private schools, foster homes, adult living facilities or homes for the elderly, adult family homes, residential drug treatment facilities, and other residential facilities. Many of these facilities are also licensed by other State agencies (Department of Children & Families, Agency for Health Care Administration).

Child Care

Inspection, regulation, and licensing of Child Care and Family Home Child Care Facilities

A special Act allows Palm Beach County to create its own local rules and regulations for child care facilities. This Act was in place prior to establishment of State regulations for such institutions. By law, these regulations must be at least as stringent as the State requirements; in several instances, however, the local rules are more stringent. (Only eight other counties in the State have the authority to write their own rules for child care. Child Care Facilities elsewhere in the State are regulated by the Department of Children and Families.)

Family Day Care Facilities

Family day care is home-based child care or babysitting at home with five or fewer children.  In Palm Beach County, a family day care home must be licensed before taking care of children.
