
What schools
are doing to decrease the
prevalence of obesity in children
2004 – Congress amended the Richard
B. Russell National School Lunch Act to include local wellness policies,
this law mandated:
- All local education agencies participating in
school meal program establish local wellness policy by start of
2006-2007 school year
Types of Interventions- Local Wellness Policies
- Nutrition standards: including nutritional
guidelines for all foods offered at school
- Physical Activity: promotion and increased
opportunity to be physically active
- Other school based activities to promote student
wellness
The School Physical Activity Environment
- Federal Government awarded ~$73 million in grants
to increase physical activity in schools
- Awards ranged from $75,000 to $650,000 in 2005
Plenty Fruits & Vegetables
- Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program-offered
outside regular school meals
- Farm-to-School Programs: local farmers
provide schools with produce
- School Garden: students participate in “seed
to table” gardening
