World Breastfeeding Week 2010
Breastfeeding: Just Ten Steps! The Baby Friendly Way.

Each year, over 120 countries celebrate World Breastfeeding Week.  The United States celebrates from August 1st to August 7th.  The 2010 World Breastfeeding Week commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the World Health Organization’s “Innocenti Declaration” that calls for implementation of the “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding” in all maternity facilities.

Health care facilities play a vital role in the establishment of breastfeeding. The “Ten Steps to Successful World Breastfeeding Week 2010 1 - 7th August 2010Breastfeeding” provides supportive pathways enabling women to achieve their breastfeeding goals. This effort also helps the United States achieve the National 2010 Breastfeeding Objectives.

The Palm Beach County Health Department WIC Program (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) celebrates the whole month of August, by recognizing all the exclusively breastfeeding families in each of the 6 WIC sites.  The WIC staff is hard at work planning a fun day with special invitations, food, games and prizes.  WIC is very grateful for the Palm Beach County Health Department Volunteer Services’ donations and support for breastfeeding.

WIC and the Breastfeeding Coalition of Palm Beach County would like to recognize all the maternity hospitals who have worked very hard to increase their breastfeeding rates and provide staff lactation training.  Special thanks also go to the supporting and collaborating organizations such as the Children’s Services Council, Healthy Beginnings and Healthy Start, WHIN (Women’s’ Health Initiative), The Children’s Healing Institute, Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies, Community Voice and many other individuals for their outstanding support.
