Monthly Nutrition Tips

March is National Nutrition Month®

March is National Nutrition Month

Many of you especially in the field of nutrition know that Monday, March 1, 2010 marks the beginning of National Nutrition Month®, a campaign to emphasize the importance of nutrition as a key component of good health. However, many of you may not know that National Nutrition Month® (which has a long history) was actually preceded by the “National Nutrition Week” campaign which debuted in 1973 with the theme “Invest in Yourself – Buy Nutrition.” Growing public interest in nutrition and the popularity of the campaign led to expansion of the week long campaign into a month long campaign called National Nutrition Month® in 1980.

This yearly campaign which was developed by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) is specifically centered on getting people to make educated food choices, practice sound eating habits and take part in regular physical activity. The theme for this year’s National Nutrition Month® campaign is “Nutrition From the Ground Up.”

Highlighting the month long campaign will be the celebration of the third annual Registered Dietitian Day on March 10, 2010. The two-fold purpose of this day is to increase awareness about the role of Registered Dietitians (RD’s) as the expert providers of nutrition and food services as well as to celebrate their dedication in helping people experience healthier lifestyles.

For those you outside of the field of nutrition do you ever feel like you are being inundated with conflicting studies about what is good to eat versus what is not good to eat on a daily basis? Furthermore, with the wealth of information on the Internet you are probably finding it increasingly difficult to decipher fact from fiction when it comes to health and nutrition information. The good news is that you need not look any further than to the list below of some of the resources written by credentialed experts in the field of nutrition also known as RD’s.
