Hungry For A Snack?

Snacking may already be part of your daily routine at work, home, school, or even while driving. However, did you know that snacking can make a difference in your health?

Choosing the right snacks can help you:

  • Manage your weight through better portion control during regular meals.

  • Get the nutrients you might be missing or not consuming enough of, at mealtime.

  • Enjoy eating between meals without feeling guilty.

Now that you know snacking can be beneficial to your health, the next step is to choose the best snacks that will do the job. If you are in the mood for something:

  • Sweet: try your favorite fruits, drink a fruit smoothie or be adventurous and try a new exotic fruit every week or month (papaya, mango, star fruit, pomegranate, etc)

  • Crunchy: try vegetables dipped in plain or vanilla yogurt, low-fat peanut butter or fat-free cream cheese, blend a vegetable with your favorite fruit into a juice.

  • Refreshing: try water as part of your fruit smoothies, drink it with a lemon wedge, or serve it in an elegant glass.

  • Exciting: try a homemade trail mix with dry fruits, nuts and cereal or homemade ice cream made from the frozen fruit smoothie.

Recipe for a fruit smoothie:

1 (6 oz) yogurt (any flavor or plain)
1 (6 oz) can of 100% pineapple-orange juice
¼ cup frozen fruit (peaches, strawberries, etc.)
1 tbs sugar or honey
1 banana (optional)
4 ice cubes (optional)

Blend all the ingredients in a blender and serve cold. You can use the same fruit flavor for the yogurt and frozen fruit or you can use different fruit flavors for both. The leftover smoothie can be frozen and eaten as a healthy version of a homemade ice cream.

Go ahead, have fun making your snacks, and best of all, enjoy them since they are guilt-free!
