National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week October 23- 29, 2011 Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future 10/25/2011

Today, childhood lead poisoning is considered the most preventable environmental disease among young children, yet
an estimated 250,000 U.S. children have elevated blood-lead levels. For children, even low levels of exposure to lead can cause
a host of developmental effects such as learning disabilities, decreased intelligence and speech, language, and behavioral
problems, which can affect children for a lifetime. A simple blood test can determine lead levels in your child. The Florida
Department of Health (FDOH) and Palm Beach County Health Department (PBCHD) are committed to eliminating this burden to
children’s health.

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL—Hundreds of babies are born to girls under age 16 every year in the county
and many of those girls have a second child by age 18.

The question that remains unanswered is why these young people become parents. Some speculate it’s prestigious

it’s a lack of good preventive education….some say it’s just a risk free attitude among teens.

parents on early sexual activity. In addition to the possible resulting pregnancy other issues
teens should be aware of is the need for HIV/AIDS testing, Human Paploma Virus (HPV)
vaccinations, STD testing, family planning, birth control methods, relationships and parenting.

March 24th Marks World TB Day A REMINDER THIS DANGEROUS DISEASE STILL EXISTS 03/17/2011

World TB Day is March 24th and this year’s theme is “TB elimination: Together We Can!” This
annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium
tuberculosis, the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB). During this time, TB killed one out of every
seven people living in the United States and Europe. Dr. Koch’s discovery was the most important step
taken toward the control and elimination of this deadly disease. “The threat of this debilitating
disease still exists today as 9 million new infections are reported annually throughout the world,”
said Alina Alonso, M.D., Palm Beach County Health Department Director, “In 2010, we treated 69 cases
locally, 10 more cases than the year before.”

CDC Acreage Cancer Letter - 02-01/2010

Dear Dr. Watkins,
I have reviewed the methods and results in the Florida Department of Health report entitled
“Acreage SIR Recalculation Population Estimate Methods and Results”. In the report, the
authors describe 3 methods of estimating population in the acreage area for the period of 2001 to
2007. The new population estimates were then used to recalculate three-year standardized
incidence ratios (SIRs) for the 0-19 year age group for all cancers, brain cancer, and brain/CNS
cancers.

Acreage SIR Recalculation Population Estimate Methods and Results - 02/02/2010

Problem Statement
Population counts for the Acreage area stratified by age group and gender are needed to
recalculate Standardized Incidence Ratios (SIRs) for all cancers, brain cancer, and brain/other
central nervous system (CNS) cancers for those 0-19 years of age. U.S. Census data for 2000
are the only area-specific population data available. Prior SIR calculations used 2000 U.S.
Census data as the population estimates from 1995 to 2007. Anecdotal reports state that the
area’s population has increased to about 50,000, whereas the 2000 U.S. Census count is about
29,000.
