For Release Friday , 31st
August, 2001
Against Tobacco (SWAT), the Board approved the development of a new ordinance which states:
'It shall be unlawful for any tobacco retailer to sell, permit to be sold, offer for sale or display for sale any tobacco product by means of self-service display or placement or by any other means other than vendor assisted sales '
Simply translated this means that retailers within Palm Beach County can no longer place tobacco products on the counter for easy access to children, these products must be maintained behind the counter and vendors must assist in the sale of these products. By their definition, vendor assisted means the customer has no access to tobacco products without the assistance of the vendor, store owner or other store employee. The County is currently addressing this issue of smoke/tobacco shops as it applies to this ordinance.
During the month of August, notification of this new ordinance was mailed to over 1700 tobacco retailers in our County. Violation of this ordinance is punishable upon conviction by a fine up to $500 or 60 days imprisonment.
