TALLAHASSEE Florida Department of Health Secretary John O. Agwunobi, M.D., M.B.A., has announced the appointment of Annie Neasman, R.N., M.S., as Deputy Secretary. Neasman, the chief public health nurse for the state of Florida, becomes the first person in the state’s history to hold both titles.
Agwunobi cited Neasman’s hands-on experience, which included oversight of the recovery efforts following Hurricane Andrew, among her major strengths. Annie brings a lifetime of public health service and experience to the position, said Agwunobi. Florida is truly fortunate to have someone who has been on the frontlines during our state’s advancements in public health. Her perspectives, which come from her time in South Florida at the local level and her time here at the state level, are invaluable.
During Neasman’s 32+ years of public health dedication, she has served as the Executive Administrator of the Miami-Dade County Health Department, Director of Family Health Services, and Acting Deputy Secretary for Health. Neasman accepted the position of director of family health services in Tallahassee two years ago, after a distinguished career of public health service in Miami-Dade County. Prior to becoming executive director of the Miami-Dade County Health Department, Neasman held the position of deputy district administrator for Health & Rehabilitation Services in District 11 and Public Health Unit Senior administrator for District 11.
Neasman earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Florida A & M University and a master of science degree in adult education from Florida International University. Among other accomplishments, Neasman is named in the Florida A & M Nursing Hall of Fame and was awarded the HRS Senior Management Service Award in 1996.
