PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL Following two confirmed cases and four suspect cases of cyclospora in the southern areas of Palm Beach County the Health Department has begun an investigation into the cause.
Cyclospora is a parasite that has been found in berries, fresh basil and mesculin lettuce (baby lettuce) normally imported from outside the United States and suspected in contaminated water. When consumed the parasite can cause severe diarrhea, vomiting and fatigue.
Dr. Jean Malecki, Director of the Health Department commented, At this time we know of two cases that occurred in December and four more possible cases in January. Dr. Malecki went on to say, It is unusual to see cyclospora this time of year as it normally pops up in May or during the warmer months. We are looking into any possible link between these cases but as yet have not found anything.
The Health Department has notified area hospitals and physicians to test any patients that may have the symptoms. Individuals can contact the Health Departments Epidemiology Division at
(561) 840-4564 to report any suspect cases of
cyclospora.
Dr. Malecki also mentioned that a good preventive measure is to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with clean water.
