Encephalitis update Palm Beach County
<< Back to Press

For Release   Friday, 19th October,  2001

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL The Palm Beach County Health Department continues to monitor for the presence of St. Louis encephalitis, West Nile Virus and Equine Encephalitis. Weekly test results from the sentinel flocks of chickens located throughout the county remain negative for signs of these mosquito-carrying diseases.

Statewide there have been 11 human cases of West Nile Virus reported this year and 49 counties remain under a medical alert for heightened awareness for the presence of the disease.

Mosquito-born illnesses are preventable, according to health officials, who also urge citizens to wear long sleeved shirts and long pants during evening and night hours, use an insect repellant and eliminate standing water around their homes.
