For Release Monday,
10th September,
2001
PALM BEACH COUNTY, Dr. Jean Malecki, Director, Palm Beach County Health Department, issued a 60 day Rabies Alert today for the area bounded by the L-10 canal, L-14 canal, Lyons Road and Floridas Turnpike in Western Palm Beach County.
According to Dr. Malecki the Alert is being issued as a result of a third wild animal being confirmed with rabies in the area since August 16, 2001. The first case, a raccoon, tested positive after being captured following an encounter with dogs off of Blanchette Road. September 4, a fox bit a male on his heel off Hooks Road and on September 7 a raccoon was captured in the same location, both tested positive for rabies. The bitten individual is taking the rabies shots as a precaution.
During the Alert Animal Care and Control will be trapping and testing raccoons and other stray wildlife in the area for rabies. In addition, stray domestic animals will be captured and impounded for observation. All area residents are reminded to have their animals vaccinated against rabies and report any suspicious animals to Animal Care and Control at (561)233-1200 Ext. "0".
Rabies is an invariably fatal, acute viral disease that is preventable if adults and children follow basic precautions when dealing with wild animals, strays and pets. Palm Beach County has had 10 reported rabid animals since January 1, 2001.
If no other rabid animals are found in the area the Rabies Alert will be lifted November 10, 2001.
