Eligibility Determination:

WIC serves infants, children up to 5 years, pregnant women, breast-feeding women, and women in the first 6 months after giving birth.  Participants must meet liberal income guidelines or participate in Medicaid, Food Stamps, or WAGES/TANF.  Applicants are required to show current proof of income, identity, and address.

Food Assistance:

WIC provides eligible participants with checks for supplemental nutritious food.  Women and children receive checks for milk, cheese, eggs, fruit or vegetable juice, iron-fortified cereal, and beans or peanut butter.  Women who exclusively breast-feed also receive carrots and tuna.  Non-breast feeding infants receive iron-fortified formula.

Group Classes:

WIC offers free interactive nutrition education and parenting classes in all service locations.  Classes offered include:  feeding infants 3-5 months old and 8-10 months old, healthy snacks, reading food labels, economical food shopping, nutrition and pregnancy, breast-feeding, how to use your WIC foods, feeding toddlers, overweight children, and nutrition for 3-5 year olds.

Nutrition Assessment and Counseling:

WIC provides individual nutrition and diet assessment and counseling to all applicants.  Participants and caretakers are counseled on health risks related to nutrition, either preventive or therapeutic.  Infant and child participants are also screened and referred for immunization services.
